Keynote Speaker: General Michael V. Hayden

General Michael Hayden, former director of the National Security Agency (NSA) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), will explore “Current and Future Security Threats to the United States” at CSAA's Annual Meeting in Hawaii this October.

As CIA director, Hayden oversaw the plans, intentions and capabilities of U.S. adversaries, and conducted covert operations to thwart terrorists and other enemies of the United States.

Before becoming director of the CIA, he served as the country’s first principal deputy director of National Intelligence, and was the highest-ranking intelligence officer in the armed forces. Earlier, he served as commander of the Air Intelligence Agency, director of the Joint Command and Control Warfare Center, director of the NSA and chief of the Central Security Service.

Hayden was graduated from Duquesne University with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1967 and a master’s degree in modern American history in 1969.  He was a distinguished graduate of the university’s ROTC program, and began his active military service in 1969. He also did postgraduate work at the Defense Intelligence School conducted by the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Currently, he serves as a principal at The Chertoff Group, a security and risk management advisory firm.

Hayden will offer his perspective on the future of security at CSAA's Annual Meeting on Monday, Oct. 15, 2012.

About Big Island, Hawaii

The Big Island of Hawaii isn’t just big, it’s still growing. The Island of Hawaii is the youngest island in the Hawaiian chain and is also by far the biggest, providing a vast canvas of environments to discover a variety of unrivaled natural wonders. It is the home of one of the world’s most active volcanoes (Kilauea), the tallest sea mountain in the world at more than 33,000 feet (Maunakea), the most massive mountain in the world (Maunaloa) and the largest park in the state (Hawaii Volcanoes National Park).

It’s easy to feel awed on Big Hawaii Island. From the molten magma flowing from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to the snow-capped heights of Maunakea; from the green rainforests of the Hamakua Coast to the jet-black sands of Punaluu Beach; Hawaii Island is an unrivaled expression of the power of nature.

To avoid confusion with the name of the entire state, the Island of Hawaii is often called the “Big Island.” Nearly twice as big as the other Hawaiian Islands combined, its sheer size can be inspiring. You’ll find all but two of the world's climatic zones within this island’s shores.

The dramatic size and scope of the largest Hawaiian Island create a microcosm of environments and activities. On this island’s vast tableau, you’ll find everything from incredible golf courses to modest local towns and sacred Hawaiian historical sites, from the birthplace of King Kamehameha I to Hawaii’s first missionary church in Historic Kailua Village (Kailua-Kona). With so much to see, it’s best to experience the island in small pieces. There’s plenty of room on Hawaii Island for your return.
