CSAA and UL to Offer Seminars on Obtaining UL Listing
"So You Want To Be A UL Central Station"

The Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) are pleased to announce a series of seminars, starting late this fall which have been designed to assist central stations in obtaining their UL Listing.

According to CSAA president Lou Fiore, "Many non-UL Listed central stations have come to the realization that AHJ's, and national, state and local codes are increasingly requiring UL Listed installations and monitoring. One of the stated objectives of CSAA is to assist non-UL central stations to raise their standards and help them through the process. Accordingly, CSAA has recognized this growing need and combined with UL to present a comprehensive course designed to bring these central stations to the UL standard of excellence being demanded in today's' marketplace".

Course content has been developed by CSAA and UL and will include a one-and-a-half day seminar late this fall, with several to follow early next year. The seminars will be offered in different geographical areas.

The course will include such items as:

  • Checklists

  • A description and overview of the process

  • Contractual arrangements between parties

  • A "walk through" of the process

  • Key areas UL is looking for in the listing process

  • Personal UL contacts who will provide on-going assistance through the process

  • Applications

  • Standards

  • What applies to your central station and what doesn't

"This course is designed to overcome the perception that the UL Listing process is exceptionally cumbersome and difficult. It need not be when armed with a step-by-step guide and a mentor to help these central stations through the process" according to CSAA executive vice president, Steve Doyle.

"There is not only a growing recognition of the advantages of third-party oversight of installation and monitoring by the AHJ's, but a demand for it," added Doyle.

"Much of this demand is the result of four or five years of distribution of the Fire and Burglar Alarm Systems Guides. These have become "The Bible" for many of the AHJ's and point out the many advantages for the AHJ's and the general public of UL Listed systems and monitoring," said Doyle.

A complete course description, locations and dates will be available in late September.
