In June, CheckPoint Systems and CHC Forecast, Inc. released the results of a pre-employment screening survey given to 20,000 randomly-selected job applicants. The survey revealed that 22.6% of the applicants were classified as "high risk." The classification was based upon the applicant's own admissions of prior dishonest acts and their attitudes concerning honesty. Nearly 29% said they could be tempted to steal from an employer, nearly 18% said they might help friends steal from their company, and another 18% admitted they had stolen money within the past three years. The 4,525 high-risk job applicants admitted to stealing a total of $174,570 worth of merchandise and money. Common estimates indicate that the actual dollar amount for stolen company items is 10 times the admitted amount. The security industry will soon have a better way to screen out these type of employees by using the CSAA Hire Screen, the result of the partnership between the Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) and ChoicePoint™ Services Inc. to provide pre-employment screening services through the CSAA Web site, www.csaaul.org.
