In March 2002, Nevada Bell filed an advise letter with the Nevada Public Utilities Commission to both grandfather and sunset its Alarm Plus derived channel transmission service which it initially made available to the alarm industry in 1988. Nevada Bell asked for authority to amend its tariffs so it could terminate the service in mid-December 2002, contending that the central station equipment was obsolete, no longer available and they could not assure their ability to maintain the equipment and the related transmission facilities. The two alarm companies using the service in the Reno area asked Mitchell, Silberberg & Knupp LLP to intervene in the proceeding and request additional time, as each company has numerous customers still using the service and the companies would be unable to meet the suggested deadline. The matter was set for hearing before the PUC in mid-August, but at the end of July, Nevada Bell agreed to settle the matter and meet the alarm dealers' requirements. Nevada Bell agreed to postpone the termination of the service until the earlier of December 31, 2003, or when no more customers are using the service. The telephone company further agreed to continue to contract service of its equipment to the appropriate hardware vendors and to also look to its affiliates (e.g. Pacific Bell) if it needed parts or equipment to maintain the service. The alarm dealers agreed to not add any new customers and to convert existing customers to alternative services as soon as reasonably possible. We believe that other telephone utilities will seek to withdraw the service in the near future. Therefore, if you are using derived channel services, you may wish to contact your local utility and ascertain their plans for derived channel, and you should consider moving to alternative transmission facilities. |
We have been informed that many post offices are eliminating their regular telephone numbers and are opting for an automated telephone service. If you monitor the alarms of post offices, you may want to verify their phone number. Some alarm companies have found out about the telephone number change when verifying alarms, which has resulted in unnecessary false alarms. Annual Meeting Update There are only 57 days until CSAA's 2002 Annual Meeting! Over 150 attendees and guests have already registered for the 2002 CSAA Annual Meeting. With the end of summer and the return to normality in everyone's lives, we are expecting many more. Don't wait--send yours in now while there is room available. The meeting will be fantastic, with super activities, but more importantly, GREAT presentations. For example, the dynamic duo of industry's Graybeards Ron Davis and Dorsie Mosher, will share some "Lessons Learned from the Battlefield on How to Build a Business" on Monday, October 28 at 9:30am. The presentation will provide a list of the business lessons developed by the Graybeards "brain trust" and the attendees of the upcoming Graybeards Symposium (see dates below).
