Salt Lake City Voters Against Verified Response
A recent Alarm Industry Research & Education Foundation (AIREF) survey conducted in Salt Lake City, Utah, one of the first communities to adopt verified response, indicates that voters overwhelmingly object to verified response.
Sixty five percent (65%) of registered voters disapprove of it and would vote for politicians who would change it. In addition, the survey indicates that the program may decrease a city’s attractiveness to businesses.
Seventy-three percent of business owners surveyed in Salt Lake City said if all other factors were equal, they would choose to locate in a city without verified response. Three-fifths of those surveyed said they would vote against candidates who supported the law.
Bisconti Research, Inc. interviewed 515 random voters in Salt Lake City by telephone in May 2006 on behalf of AIREF. Salt Lake City adopted its “verified response” ordinance in 2000.
Today, after more than five years of the non-response ordinance, Salt Lake City’s burglary rate remains far above the national average, despite claims that the ordinance would free police time for more productive uses.
