New CSAA E-mail System

Subscribers to this e-mailed newsletter received yesterday an e-mail from the "Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA)" and with a subject line of "Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) Mailing List-Action Required."

This e-mail is legitimate. As we mentioned in the winter issue of the CSAA Dispatch, we are changing the way we send our e-mailed newsletters. We also reminded everyone last week in the March 2 issue of this CSAA Signals.

Please help us have a smooth transition to this new system by clicking on the words that say "Click here to confirm your subscription" in the e-mail that you received yesterday. After a transition period, anyone not confirming their subscription will be dropped from the list.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Celia Besore at 703-242-4670, Ext. 16 or by replying to this e-mail.

Update on CSAA Standards Activity

Video Verification Standard CS-V-02

The Video Verification Committee has completed its work and has submitted a request to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), opening a 45-day public review, beginning with the ANSI Standards Action publication on March 9 and ending April 23, 2007. This standard focuses on how to use video to verify alarm signals and to help visually identify the source of the alarm event.

According to procedures, the standard is now available for your review and comment. You may download the standard at www.csaaul.org/VideoVerification21507.doc

If you should have any comments, you can access the form at: www.csaaul.org/Form_for_Proposals_on_CSAA_Standards_Documents.pdf.

Please fill out the form in its entirety. Follow the instructions and be sure to sign the form. Please submit any changes using the above form to communications@csaaul.org or by fax to Celia Besore at 703-242-4675.

If you have any questions, please direct your inquiries and comments to Jim McMullen at jmcsaa@copsmonitoring.com.

Alarm Verification Committee ANSI/CSAA CS-V-01-2004

The Alarm Verification and Notification Procedures Standards Committee has opened the CS-V-01 standard for revision. This is an important standard that has given birth to Enhanced Call Verification as one of its components. The committee has opened a window for comments ending on May 11, 2007. This standard is an ANSI-approved standard and by ANSI procedure, it must be open for revision at least every five years.

If you wish to submit a change, you should use the form at: www.csaaul.org/Form_for_Proposals_on_CSAA_Standards_Documents.pdf

Please fill out the form in its entirety. Follow the instructions and be sure to sign the form. Please submit any changes using the above form to communications@csaaul.org or by fax to Celia Besore at 703-242-4675.

2007 Daylight Saving Time Change May Affect Alarm Equipment

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 changed the starting and ending dates for Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the United States.

Daylight Saving Time will begin on Sunday, March 11 this year, and will end on Sunday, November 4, 2007. The new Daylight Saving Time will be four weeks longer than in previous years.

Some Products Affected by the DST Change

This change may affect alarm equipment, security systems, access control, CCTV, and computer applications, such as Microsoft Outlook.

GE Security, the NAPCO Security Group and Bosch Security Systems, Inc. sent bulletins advising on the impact of the DST change on its products.

  • GE Security sent a notification that several of its GE Security products are affected by the new DST dates. Unless certain updates are applied to these products, they may not operate as expected.

To ensure that the GE Security products you service, install, and use are compliant with DST dates, visit www.gesecurity.com/dst.

  • NAPCO indicated that the change will affect all control panels that display the time on the keypad and include event logging. Some older control panel versions will require a firmware upgrade because the current firmware contains a non-programmable ("hard coded") Daylight Saving Time table. Some other control panel versions had an adjustable table incorporated several years ago in anticipation of any DST changes and require only a program download to adjust for the new DST parameters.

Click here for their technical bulletin. Thanks to Vector Security for the copy of this bulletin.

For additional information about which control panels, please contact NAPCO at 1-800-645-9445 or at www.napcosecurity.com.
  • Bosch indicated the change will affect some of its Intrusion products, Fire products, CCTV products, and Systems products.

Click here for their technical bulletin. Thanks to Vector Security for the copy of this bulletin.

Please contact Bosch at 585-223-4060 or at www.boschsecurity.com for more information.

Some products, such as DMP's control panels, are not affected. Because DMP control panels include a programming option for daily time updates, the new Daylight Saving Time (DST) calendar required by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 will have no impact on DMP panels. By synching with a DMP receiver, DMP panels avoid the risk of generating inaccurate time stamped openings, closings, trouble signals, and alarms during a seasonal time change, including the period of DST that has been moved forward from April to March.

You may want to contact other equipment manufacturers and providers to ensure that the their equipment and systems will work during the changed dates.
