Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) “Red Flag” Rules

The Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) invites you to a free webinar on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EDT on the subject of the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) “Red Flag” Rules. The webinar will be conducted by Mary Sisak, Partner at Blooston, Mordkofsky, Dickens, Duffy and Prendergast. Ms. Sisak is a co-author of a manual on Red Flag compliance.

Background on the FTC’s Red Flag Rules

In Nov. 1, 2008, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) established rules requiring any entity that regularly extends, renews or continues credit, such as alarm companies, to develop and implement written identity theft prevention programs. While enforcement of the rules has been delayed several times, the new date for enforcement is June 1, 2010. The enforcement delay may not relieve a business from financial liability to a customer whose identity is stolen and the business did not have a Red Flag program in place.

These rules require companies to implement procedures to detect, prevent and mitigate identity theft with respect to new and existing “covered accounts.” A “covered account” is a continuing relationship: (a) that a creditor offers or maintains with a person to facilitate the person’s purchase of products or services primarily for personal, family or household purposes; and (b) that involves or is designed to permit multiple payments or transactions. In addition, a “covered account” also includes any other continuing relationship that a creditor offers or maintains for which there is a reasonably foreseeable risk of injury (including risk of financial, operational, compliance, reputation and/or litigation injury) from identity theft: (a) to the customer of the account; or (b) to the safety and soundness of the creditor.

The core of the program is the listing of various patterns, practices and specific activities (called “Red Flags”) which may indicate the possible theft of the identities of: (a) existing customers maintaining “covered accounts” with the Company; and (b) new or purported new customers opening “covered accounts” with the Company. The rules require companies to periodically conduct a risk assessment to determine whether it offers or maintains “covered accounts.”

Don’t miss this important webinar—you are welcome to invite others inside or outside your company.

If you are not planning on distributing give-aways, but would like to participate in this cross-promotional activity, please contact us at the e-mail addresses/phone number below.

Once we receive your commitment to incorporate our CSAA 60th Anniversary logo, your company will benefit from the following program:

  • Each attendee packet will inlcude a special “passport” flyer . The passport will include a list the participating exhibitors. Your booth will be highlighted on the passport's show floor plan. The attendees will visit each of the listed exhibitors’ booths and collect stamps/stickers supplied by CSAA. Attendees who receive stamps/stickers from every exhibitor in the passport will be eligible to participate in a drawing hosted by CSAA for an E-book (such as the Kindle or the Nook) at the conclusion of the show.
  • Special promotions through CSAA publications (CSAA web site, CSAA social media sites, CSAA e-newsletter) will promote the names of CSAA Anniversary supporters and their booth numbers.
  • Signage at the CSAA booth will list each of the participating exhibitors with the respective booth numbers. Additional passports will be available at the CSAA Booth.

This is a convenient way for your company to support the CSAA’s 60th Anniversary celebration and gain extra booth traffic.
